MTD for Income Tax 2026: What Every Sole Trader Needs to Know

From 6 April 2026, HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) officially comes into effect — marking one of the biggest changes to how sole traders manage and report their income in decades. At SLF Accounting and Bookkeeping Services, we’re here to help you understand what’s changing, who’s affected, and how to get ready.

What Is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?

Making Tax Digital is a government initiative to simplify tax reporting by moving everything to a digital system. If you’re a sole trader or landlord, MTD for Income Tax replaces the traditional annual Self Assessment with quarterly digital submissions to HMRC.

In simple terms, instead of one big tax return each year, you’ll submit four shorter updates — giving HMRC a clearer, real-time view of your income and expenses.

According to HMRC’s phased rollout, MTD aims to make tax reporting more accurate, reduce errors, and help taxpayers stay on top of their finances.

Who Must Join in 2026?

The new rules apply in stages:

Year

Qualifying Income (Self-employment + Property)

MTD Start Date

2026

Over £50,000

6 April 2026

2027

£30,000 – £50,000

6 April 2027

2028 (planned)

£20,000 – £30,000

6 April 2028

If your total qualifying income for the 2024/25 tax year exceeds £50,000, you’ll need to start using approved MTD software from April 2026.

Landlords are also included — if you have both business and rental income, each source will need its own digital records.

What Changes Under MTD?

MTD introduces a few key differences in how you’ll manage your taxes:

  1. Digital record-keeping:You must use HMRC-recognised software (like Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent) to record income and expenses.

  2. Quarterly submissions:You’ll send four updates per year to HMRC via your software. The deadlines are:

    • 7 August

    • 7 November

    • 7 February

    • 7 May

  3. End-of-year declaration:You’ll finalise your tax position annually by 31 January, replacing the old Self Assessment return.

  4. Penalties for late filing:A new points-based penalty system will apply after the first “soft landing” year. Consistent non-compliance could lead to £200 fines for late submissions.

What You Need to Do Now

If you’re a sole trader preparing for digital tax reporting, start taking these steps right away:

  1. Check your income threshold.Add together your self-employment and property income for 2024/25. If it’s over £50,000, you’re in scope for April 2026.

  2. Choose MTD-compatible software.Popular options include FreeAgent, Xero, and QuickBooks. Make sure your system connects to your business bank account and supports quarterly updates.

  3. Go digital early.Begin recording income and expenses digitally now. Early preparation helps you spot and fix issues before they cause HMRC compliance headaches.

  4. Set reminders for quarterly deadlines. Each quarter’s update must be filed on time — consistency is key.

  5. Talk to your accountant. At SLF Accounting, we can help implement MTD-approved systems, train you on using them efficiently, and handle your submissions.

What Stays the Same

  • You still pay income tax and National Insurance in the same way.

  • Allowable expenses and tax reliefs remain unchanged.

  • You can still use an accountant or bookkeeper to manage your digital records and submissions — in fact, this is now more important than ever.

The Benefits of Going Digital

While MTD introduces new admin obligations, it also brings long-term advantages:

  • Fewer tax surprises thanks to real-time income tracking

  • Reduced paperwork and automated record-keeping

  • More accurate tax estimates and financial insights

  • Stronger collaboration with your accountant
